Last Thursday (March 10, 2022), we responded to a call from a previous client asking for help in servicing their Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and Synchronizing Panel.
Our team, comprised of our Head of Engineering, Engr. Paul V. Avena, and IT Lead, Christian Pilarca, went to Baler, Aurora with the expectation of only replacing some control components for the ATS to be operable.
Upon arrival, they checked in with our contact and found out that because our client’s location was in a remote area, there was a scarcity of available information about our client’s system. In addition to this, our team also found out that while our client’s facilities team was capable, there were some gaps in their training to well enough handle their system.
From here, our team helped our client figure out their system by interviewing our client, and from there, they had a discussion on what their setup was, what their system was, what the relationship of their equipment was with their system, and how they work together. This helped our client better understand how their system worked, and from a simple service call, our visit included an “Impromptu Masterclass in ATS Operation”, as Engr. Paul would call it.
As our team understood our clients’ system, we were also able to diagnose the problem and prescribe our solutions for troubleshooting. Initially, we expected that the ATS controls were defective and were in need of replacement. However, we found out that this was not the main cause of the problem. Our team found out that the system’s breakers also had defective components, preventing the breakers to operate properly. Because the breakers in the ATS cannot operate, there was no way for the resort to turn on their backup systems in the event of a power failure.
After understanding the system and
troubleshooting the problem, our team was able to make the ATS operable in manual mode, given that there were some unavailable components to enable the automatic operation of the ATS.
In two hours, we were able to give the resort a means of transferring their power through their backup generator systems, manually.
Apart from wanting to provide our technical support and service to our clients across the country, trips like this give our teams the feeling of fulfillment because not only do they get the opportunities to provide our service to remote places, we are also given the chance to explore and experience the beauty of our country.
