Reduce Energy Costs with Intelligent Heat Management | VACON NXC Back Channel Cooling

Writer's picture: Dominique AvenaDominique Avena

Together with Danfoss Singapore, our team delivered 20 units of VACON 100 drives assembled into two VACON NXC Enclosed Drives for Northern Cement’s Line 3 Expansion in 2020. Apart from the supply of the Cabinet Drives, our Engineering Works included the units' Installation, Testing, and Commissioning.

About the VFD: VACON NXC Enclosed Drives

The enclosed VACON® NXC is the compact drive that performs reliably in harsh operating conditions in, for example, the mining, oil and gas, or water and wastewater industries. The thermally managed enclosure extends the drive’s lifetime and ensures trouble-free operation.

Related Applications

The VACON® NXC covers applications in Pumps, Fans, Extruders, Conveyors, Thrusters and Power Conversion and Propulsion Units.

In our project with Northern Cement Corporation, eleven units are used for the Cooler fans, while the other nine units are used for Baghouse Filter Fans.

Reduce energy costs with intelligent heat management

Part of the features our solution delivers is Back Channel Cooling. With Built-in Back Channel Cooling, operating costs and power consumption, as typically needed by a supporting Air-Conditioning System, are significantly reduced.

What is Back Channel Cooling?

The proprietary back-channel cooling concept available for VLT® and VACON® Drives is based on a unique heatsink design, with heat pipes that conduct heat 20,000 times more efficiently than traditional solutions.

Using a minimal amount of energy, the concept exploits the heat differentials in materials and air temperature to effectively cool high performing electronics.¹

Back-Channel Cooling Features

Benefits of Back-Channel Cooling

The load on the air conditioning system due to heat loss from the drives and other equipment in the MCC (Motor Control Center) Room normally results in a relatively high power consumption of the air conditioning system.

By employing a VFD with Back-Channel Cooling,

  • Air conditioning may not be required in control rooms

  • If air conditioning is required, AC size is reduced

  • Reduced energy costs for running AC System

Power consumption and operating costs in the the MCC Room can also be reduced due to:

  • Lower heat losses from the drives

  • Lower heat loads in the substation of back channel cooling

  • Resultant lower power consumption of the air conditioning system in the MCC Room²

Reduce your energy costs with intelligent heat management by upgrading your equipment with Optimum Electrokonsult and Danfoss Drives.
